What about the extra hole?

It’s the question we get asked more than any other: What’s with the extra sound hole?

The answer is simple: we put it there for you. Adding a secondary sound hole adds a whole new dimension of tonal quality to a guitar in a multitude of ways.

  • It directs more sound toward the player, creating something like a personal monitor to help you hear the instrument better.

  • It changes the resonance structure of the sides of the guitar. Instead of just reflecting sound out of the top, the side sound port allows the sides of the guitar to resonate as well, creating a more dramatic player experience where you can truly “feel” the music against your body in a more immersive way.

  • It changes the overall voice of the guitar. Think of it like speaking through a mask. The vocal balance of your voice might not change, but anyone listening to you would admit that your voice is clearer and easier to understand once you take it off. Adding the hole in the side enhances the quality of the guitar’s voice. Because the sound is not being forced out in one dimension and can move more naturally there’s a much cleaner, fuller response overall, particularly in the bass tones.

  • It makes it easier to get your picks out when you drop them in (maybe not the primary reason, but once you’ve done it you’ll never want to do it any other way).

The concept of the side sound port was invented almost 30 years ago by a luthier in Canada, but its basic principles resonate deeply with our mission as a company to bring you guitars that will help you become as musically confident as possible. If you’re looking for an instrument with an extra hole, designed to give you a more immersive musical experience, reach out to us here to order a guitar designed with the player in mind.
